In 2016 my word for the year is BELIEVE!
My husband asked me how that’s different from faith and it took me a moment to realize the difference between faith & believing.
Faith is an action based on what you believe.
With all that is going on in the world today my faith has been shaken, but only when I doubt what I believe.
Sometimes it’s not even doubt and it’s just forgetting the truth, or letting other people influence my beliefs rather than being grounded in God’s Word.
Then there are moments when I truly just have to go to God. My doubts and unbelief aren’t caused by anyone else and I just have to go to the source.
Sometimes what God does or doesn’t do shakes our faith. That’s when we have to know what we believe.
I remember reading a blog where someone said they were trying to save the whole forest when they couldn’t even save the tree in their backyard.
This spoke to me on so many levels.
Sometimes we have faith for BIG miracles that we forget that everything we do is a result of something so small, and that is what we believe.
When we get weary we need to just look at the tree in the backyard and remind ourselves what we believe about that tree.
Sometimes we need to look in the mirror and ask ourself what we believe about ourself.
Or maybe we need to look at our spouse, our children, or those closest to us and ask what we believe about them.
We can look at the pain in this world and boldly believe truths like:
- God is patient so that no one will parish.
- Sin leads to death, but Jesus leads us to eternal life.
- We are pleasing to God when we have faith.
- We can go to God in prayer and He will give us what we ask for if we believe.
- It’s not about what we do it’s about why we do it.
Just the other day I was upset with the people around me. I was honestly focusing on the truth, but it was the negative truth. What I was focusing on became my belief about them. I seriously had to ask myself what I knew to be true about the people around me that was positive.
For my husband I thought about what a hard worker he was. Even in the middle of a fight we were having and all of our insecurities that sometimes resurface in our marriage, focusing on this one truth completely shifted my perspective and what I believed to be true about his character and how he feels about me and our family.
Sometimes we can get so wrapped up in wondering if we are making the right choices and if we are pleasing God, but so often we need to understand God’s faithfulness to us before we can make a commitment to be faithful to Him , or anyone else for that matter.
I am looking forward to exploring what it means to believe. I love God’s word and how He makes it so clear that having faith and believing in Him is truly the key to us walking out our faith in this world. So that’s where I am headed in 2016.
